Barnes & Noble: We Have a Best-Selling E-Reader Too
2010年12月29日星期三
Just Because I Spent $500 on an iPad Doesn’t Mean I’ll Pay a 500% Markup on an iPad Magazine Subscription
- When Wired magazine launched on the iPad in June, it racked up more than 100,000 downloads. By November the number dwindled to between 22,000 and 23,000.
- Vanity Fair, which sold about 10,500 iPad downloads in August, saw sales drop to 8,700 in November.
- Glamour saw a 40 percent decline in iPad sales between September, when it sold 4,301 copies, and November, when it sold just 2,775.
There were other declines as well, all helpfully catalogued over at Memo Pad, but you get the idea.
Seems that iPad magazines haven’t yet captured the public’s attention. Why? Overpricing, perhaps. Why pay $5 a pop for a digital copy of a publication you can subscribe to for $10 a year? Of course, the larger issue is the publishing industry’s insistence on using new platforms like the iPad to ape antiquated models like print, when it could be using them to develop entirely new ones. Just because you can arrange a pile of massive image files into a digital magazine doesn’t make it a good one.

Three Ways to Download Music To Your Zune Player
There are several ways you can download your Zune movies, Zune music videos, Zune MP3's and Zune software to your Zune player.
1) The first is from the Microsoft Zune Marketplace and other Pay-Per-Download Sites which have movie downloads, music downloads, music video downloads, and more. The problem with downloading Zune files from places like Microsoft Zune Marketplace is the cost. The Microsoft Zune Marketplace charges a monthly subscription service called the "Zune Pass" with unlimited downloads for $14.99 per month. The pay-per-download sites charge on the average about $1.00 per Zune download. So, with a Zune player that has a 30 gigabyte hard drive whic allows users to store up to 7,500 Zune MP3s, 2,500 pictures or 100 hours of Zune movies and Zune music videos, that is going to cost a fortune to fill up.
2) WiFi - Microsoft Zune players has a technology called WiFi which allows friends and family to share Zune music, Zune movies, Zune software, pictures and Zune music videos both effortlessly and wirelessly. If you have a cool picture or something you found on a zune download site you can share it easily. Anytime you come in close range of another Zune player you can connect to that Zune player via WiFi and share your Zune downloads. The only drawback is you can only play a shared song only 3 times before it is deleted although, pictures are saved and can be viewed many times. It's a nice feature but needs improvement.
3) The third way is by ripping your music CD's to your Zune player. The definition of ripping means converting CD music files to a file format usable by your Zune player which is either in MP3 or WMA file format. After doing this, all you need to do is plug your Microsoft Zune player into your computer with a USB cable and transfer the ripped music files to your Zune player using the provided Zune software.
1. Put the music CD that you want ripped into your PC.
2. After the media player opens. Select the song you would like to copy and click on RIP.
3. Save the song you just ripped to a folder of your choice.
4. Plug in your Zune Player to your PC using the USB Cable. The Zune Software will automatically search for music that you saved in the folder on your PC. Select the files you want and manually drag and drop them into your Zune player's music folder.

Web Ad Dollars Finally Overtake Newspapers
It had to happen eventually. And it may finally happen this year: Online ad spending is about to overtake total ad spending for newspapers.
So says eMarketer, which predicts that Web ad dollars will hit $25.8 billion in the U.S. in 2010, while newspaper ad dollars, for both print and online, will get to $25.7 billion.
As always, it’s worth noting that because eMarketer’s online numbers include search, these charts are really about Google more than anything else*. In fact, at $28.8 billion, Google’s projected worldwide revenue for 2010 will eclipse the U.S. newspaper business all by itself.
*To be specific: Google’s projected net U.S. revenue makes up 40 percent of eMarketer’s forecast, says senior analyst David Hallerman.

Myte, Gyst and Veer: Who’s Doing Palm’s Branding, Chaucer?
Companies often file trademarks on brands that they never end up using, so this trio of USPTO filings, made by Hewlett-Packard on December 10 isn’t exactly remarkable. But it is interesting in that the marks for which the company has applied–”Gyst,” “Myte” and “Veer“–sound suspiciously like the names of Palm products.
Certainly it doesn’t take a big leap to imagine Myte as a name for the the next iteration of the Palm Pixi, which is rumored to be smaller than its predecessor–perhaps even “the smallest smartphone ever.”
And Veer and Gyst? Who knows. Maybe HP’s branding team has been reading a bit too much Chaucer lately.

Download DVD PDF Podcast Limewire and YouTube video to iPod
Part1. How to watch PDF or electronic book on iPod Touch/Nano/Classic/Video
iPod cannot directly display PDF files, you have to convert your PDF file or electronic book to *.txt format, and make sure the file size is smaller than 4KB, and then copy the *txt file to the “Note” folder of your iPod. Here are the detailed steps:
1. Enable your iPod as a portable hard drive, plug in your iPod to computer and run iTunes, in the summary tab, check the option named “enable iPod disk mode”
2. Download and install iGadget, it can convert and cut your files to 4kb .txt files. Here is the download link: http://www.youtubetoipod.biz/software/igadget.html.
3. Connect your iPod to computer, open “My Computer”, open the iPod drive (the new drive with your iPod name), and copy the txt file to the “Note” folder, done. Then you can read the text file on iPod note.
Part2. How to rip DVD and convert video to iPod Touch/Nano/Classic/Video
iPod can only play MP4 and H.264 video, but DVD movie is MPEG-2 video and CSS protected, so you need an application to rip DVD and convert video to MP4 video, and then sync it to iPod via iTunes. I strongly recommend Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Suite; it can rip protected DVD and convert limewire, youtube video, AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV, FLV, XviD video to iPod. Also, I always use the iPod Movie Converter embedded in it to transfer video, and from my tests, it fully support all series of iPod including iPod Touch/Nano/Classic/Video. A really cool application.

Part3. How to watch iPod Video on large screen TV
Set up your iPod video options. On your iPod choose Videos -> Video Settings from the main menu. You will see three options: TV Out, TV Signal and Widescreen. Select the “TV Out” option.
Get your A/V cable. If you don't have an eighth-inch-to-RCA cable, you can pick one up on eBay for five or six bucks shipped. Search for "camcorder A/V cable." Remember, you want a three-plug yellow/red/white RCA connection at one end and a three-banded eighth-inch (3.5mm) A/V plug at the other.
1. Plug the red RCA plug into your TV's yellow RCA jack.
2. Plug the yellow RCA plug into your TV's white RCA jack.
3. Plug the white RCA plug into your TV's red RCA jack.
After making these connections, you're physically ready to begin playback.
Part4. How to download youtube video to iPod for free
iPod can play only MP4 and H.264 video, youtube video is stream video (.flv), so you need special software to capture the stream video to MP4 video, and then sync it to your iPod via iTunes. Here’re two ways to do that for free:
With free online flv converter such as http://vixy.net when you find your favorite youtube video, just copy the video URL (like this format http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUUx5FdySs ) to the input box, choose the output format as iPod video, and then click start. When the conversion finished, you will get the MP4 video download link, just download and sync it to your iPod.
With Firefox + videodownloader, if you’re using Firefox browser, just install a plug-in named videodownloader, and then you will see a small icon in the bottom right, when you watch youtube video, double click it, and then you will get the flv download link. And then convert the flv video to MP4 video with Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Suite, done.

The Full Interview Video of Google Android’s Andy Rubin
As promised, All Things Digital will be publishing the full videos of the interviews we did last week at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco.
The first extension of the event, it produced some very newsy sessions. We’ll be posting them all this week and next.
Here’s the first interview on opening night with Google Android head Andy Rubin (pictured here), conducted by Walt Mossberg and me.
It’s full of new stuff, such as the fact that Android is profitable (exactly how profitable, Rubin declined to say) and that he thought Google’s ubiquity strategy for its smartphone operating system was more akin to that of Linux than Microsoft in computers.
Rubin also commented on Google’s shift from its one-time lofty declaration to change the way mobile devices are sold to its obviously now-cozy relationship with wireless carriers.
And he complimented Apple and its iPhone, Android’s main rival.
As BoomTown said, much to see, including a look at the new Nexus S and a $10,000 Android-based Motorola demo tablet.

How to use Techspansion's open source to build iSquint and VisualHub
Squint and VisualHub, the popular video converter on Mac OS X have now gone open source. They also have got new names, Film Redux (VisualHub) and PunyVid (iSquint). As you may or may not know, the developer, Techspanion has closed shop
and after an outcry from fans, it has released the source code.
You can get them here: SourceForge.net Repository - [transcoderredux] Index of /
This a tutorial on how to use Techspansion's open source to build iSquint and VisualHub.
Here are two parts:
Part 1, How to use open source to build VisualHub (Film Redux)?
Part 2, How to use open source to build iSquint (PunyVid).
What you need:
Mac OS X 10.5, Xcode 3.0 and Techspansion's open source
Part 1, How to use open source to build VisualHub (Film Redux)?
Step 1, Open the open source, you will see two folders: FilmRedux and PunyVid. Open FilmRedux and find the file "FilmRedux.xcodeproj".
Step 2, Double click "FilmRedux.xcodeproj" to open it with Xcode.
Step 3, Click the button "Build and Go" to build VisualHub (Film Redux). That's all.
Part 2, How to use open source to build iSquint( PunyVid)?
Step 1, Open the open source, you will see two folders: FilmRedux and PunyVid. Open PunyVid and find the file "PunyVid.xcodeproj".
Step 2, Double click "PunyVid.xcodeproj" to open it with Xcode.
Step 3, Click the button "Build and Go" to build iSquint (PunyVid). That's all.
The operation is simple, but the stability would be a great concern, it kept reporting error messages during my try which is really frustrated. Perhaps it's not wise enough to spend hours coping with those errors messages, as there must be some commercial programs that perform much more reliably, like the Video Converter for Mac.
If you want to convert videos to DVD, here is DVD Creator for Mac.

iPod Compatible Video
This article is divided into four parts separately introduce what is iPod Compatible Video, which video format is better for Apple iPod Video, is my video iPod compatible and how to make the video compatible with your iPod.
Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?
Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?
Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?
Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?
Firstly, I will introduce you what is iPod Compatible Video, iPod Nano Compatible Video such as iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264, the specifications page lists the following:
Apple iPod video specifications from their official website:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
That’s a little confusing, but there’s only a few numbers you’ll need to remember for each format. The highest video bitrate with the H.264 codec is 768 kilobits per second. The biggest picture size for your H.264 movie is 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high, the exact dimensions of your iPod’s screen. Your iPod can play H.264 video at framerates up to 30 frames per second. Every one of the applications that we’ll be using encodes with the Baseline Profile. Your audio needs to be encoded as AAC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, and it can be in either stereo or mono. As long as you follow all the guidelines, your movie can be a QuickTime movie or an MPEG-4 movie file.
Your other option, MPEG-4 video, supports a much higher bitrate than H.264 video - 2,500 kilobits per second. Using higher bitrates will also create larger files. The result: you’ll have less space for additional songs and movies. The biggest picture size for your MPEG-4 video is 480 pixels wide by 480 pixels high - three times as many pixels as your iPod’s screen is capable of displaying. Your iPod will shrink the picture proportionally so that everything fits on the screen. Again, the iPod can play videos up to 30 frames per second and our audio and file format options are the same as H.264 video.
Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?
That’s a tough question. H.264 is arguably better because it offers high quality and a much smaller file size when compared to MPEG-4. However, both formats look quite good when you encode your video at the higher supported video settings. One thing that most people will agree on is that H.264 video takes longer to encode than standard MPEG-4. This means that converting a two hour movie to iPod video can take considerably longer using the H.264 codec (especially with QuickTime Pro’s pokey Export: Movie to iPod video option). Still, I prefer the H.264 codec in most instances.
Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Some of the video files that you download from the web or from file sharing networks like BitTorrent may be iPod compatible - even if they’re not marked as such.
The easiest way to determine whether a video can be played on your iPod is to open the file in QuickTime and select Window: Show Movie Info. In most cases your video should be iPod-ready if the format is H.264 or MPEG-4, the audio is AAC, and the size of your video is 320 x 240 (or smaller) for H.264 or 480 x 480 (or smaller) for MPEG-4. Also, look at the data rate and make sure it’s not over 900 kbits/sec for H.264 or 2600 kbits/sec for MPEG-4.
Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?
If you have QuickTime Pro ($30 and worth every penny) or the latest version of iTunes (free!), this is, by far, the easiest conversion that we’ll talk about.
In iTunes, after you’ve added your video to the library, right click it. Select Convert Selection for iPod. iTunes will let you know if your video is already in the correct format. If it’s not, your video will slowly be converted to an H.264 video.
UPDATE: I’ve heard several complaints of iTunes creating iPod videos without sound. You should probably avoid using iTunes to convert your videos.
In QuickTime Pro, open your movie and, in the file menu, select Export… and in the export drop-down, select Movie to iPod (320 x 240) and click Save. QuickTime will create an optimized H.264 video with AAC audio.
You may want to go pour yourself a cup of tea or take a nap. If your file is large, QuickTime’s slow conversion process can take several hours.
If you’re an inexperienced user, I recommend using QuickTime Pro or iTunes because they’re absolutely foolproof. However there are other much faster, more powerful applications for converting your videos. Read on!
Don’t have QuickTime Pro? Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter!
Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter supports so comprehensive video formats including converting MPG, MPEG, MPEG2, VOB, MP4, M4V, RM, RMVB, WMV, ASF, MKV, TS, MPV, AVI, 3GP,3G2, FLV, MPV, MOD, TOD to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264. You can customize your own output video by the settings function. For example, if you want a high quality video you can raise the values of Video Biterate, Audio Biterate and Audio Sample Rate, if you want a smaller file you can reduce the value.
If you want to make your DVD compatible with your iPod and even transfer your iPod video to Computer, you can choose Aiseesoft DVD to iPod Suite which is an all-in-one solution to convert DVD to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264 and convert video to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264. Moreover, it can transfer video from iPod to computer. You don’t need to worry about losing anything.

CTIA Boss Steve Largent Goes Deep With Mobilized
To wrap up the first week of Mobilized, I had a chat on Friday with CTIA chief Steve Largent about net neutrality, the need for more spectrum and why his member companies spend so much time bashing one another.
Yes, that Steve Largent. For those who have been in a dead zone for the past two decades, the former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver went on to become a congressman and has spent the last seven years heading up the wireless industry’s trade association–a 90-person group with an annual budget of nearly $50 million.
It was a fun talk, though he did deflect some of the more divisive questions, including whether the carriers’ differing definitions of 4G is leading to customer confusion. In general, though, Largent showed the same soft hands he had during all those years on the gridiron.
Largent began by talking about his top priorities (spectrum, spectrum and more spectrum, plus a need for no new wireless taxes) and then I jumped in. Here’s an edited transcript of our talk:
On the need for more spectrum: It really is the lifeblood of the industry. It fuels the virtuous cycle….We’ll work with any interested party to get more spectrum. It really is the most critical element to the service that we provide.
What a lot of people forget about is how long the process takes to get spectrum to the marketplace. The last two spectrum auctions that we had took somewhere between eight and 11 years to come to market. We simply can’t wait that long. The FCC and the president called for 500 MHz in the next 10 years and 300 MHz of that in the next five years. That is a laudible goal. We’re seeing if we can’t even get more spectrum and get it quicker.
That really is priority 1, 2 and 3 for us as a trade association. It has been this year and it will be until we see that spectrum auctioned.
(Largent then went on to talk about the group’s actual No. 2 and No. 3 priorities, which I will summarize. No. 2 is to keep downward pressure on taxes, such as pushing for a five-year ban on new wireless taxes. No. 3 is all the warm-fuzzy stuff like environmental friendliness and those commercials that tell you to hang up and drive.)
Mobilized: Your organization opposes the extension of net neutrality into wireless broadband. Won’t this eventually mean the end of net neutrality as a whole since everything is heading wireless?
Largent: To me, this all goes back to the first point I was making and that’s this spectrum issue. The reason wireless is unique is because of the limited amount of spectrum we have today. To alleviate that, we have to have more spectrum and the more spectrum we have, the more services we have and the necessity of managing our network becomes less severe.
Until we get to that point–and we are not there yet–we have to have the ability to manage our network. If we don’t, you could have 911 calls blocked or people’s calls from their kids in college blocked or emergency alerts blocked and that’s not the system anyone wants to see.
You’ve been at the group since 2003, so you have seen some generation shifts. How would you say the 3G to 4G transition is going, relative to past transitions?
I think it is going very well. I think it is actually going faster. This is a quantum leap, going from 3G to 4G, and it takes an incredible amount of investment. We’ve seen the first of the 4G technologies with Sprint. We see Verizon coming on very quickly this year. AT&T is following closely on their heels. T-Mobile, they have some real spectrum constraints and yet they are coming on very quickly as well.
What do you make of the fact that different companies are using different definitions of 4G. Do you think there is some risk that if your members don’t use that term to mean the same thing that consumers won’t understand the benefits of true 4G?
No. What I would tell you is this is a highly competitive marketplace. What these individual companies do in terms of marketing their plans for 4G and their services and how quickly they are available to customers, that’s a competitive practice and a competitive field. I’m not going to weigh in on that. That’s a place I am not going to go.
Obviously wireless is one of the most competitive areas, with customers looking for new services and devices every couple of years, and a lot of money is spent driving to retain and attract new users. It seems like attacks have gotten sharper in the past few years. Do you think there is more energy going into attacks, or is that just the way the game is played?
There’s a lot of sharp elbows in any competitive industry like ours and that’s not something I am embarrassed about. I’m actually very proud of the fact of how competitive our carriers are with each other. It goes beyond the carriers to handset makers to application providers. There is a lot of competition going on in this space.
The other thing to look at is the amount of money that they are spending to advertise their services. I think three of our four carriers are in the top ten of advertising. It’s very competitive, and those elbows do get sharp.
Since, I’m new to the wireless beat, I asked some of my colleagues to come up with some good, topical questions. Here’s what one came back with: The 1983 playoff win against the Dolphins was one of the most exciting and surprising games ever played. Do you agree?
I can tell you that 1983 was when this trade association came into existence….That game was very exciting–Dan Marino was a rookie that year.

Yahoo’s M&A Head Andrew Siegel Is Departing the Company
Andrew Siegel–Yahoo’s head of corporate development, who is in charge of its mergers and acquisitions strategy–is leaving the company, according to sources.
The former General Electric exec, who came to the Internet giant just over a year ago, is well liked at Yahoo and also has been active in making the rounds in the tech scene in Silicon Valley.
Siegel’s exit is part of a long line of departures of top talent under the leadership of CEO Carol Bartz.
Siegel has made some very prescient moves on game-changing companies for Yahoo to purchase–including Yelp, Foursquare and Groupon–but Yahoo has not been able to land them for a variety of reasons.
In Foursquare’s case, the geolocation hot spot decided to remain independent and take more funding, after also talking to Facebook, and moneybags Google has hip checked Yahoo out of the running for social buying phenom Groupon.
Yelp, the reviews site that had unsuccessful talks with Google too, simply did not want to sell to Yahoo.
Both also were worried about Yahoo’s future prospects and its top management’s ability to turn the situation around, multiple sources confirm, as have other top start-ups that Siegel has been interested in.
And while he has bought some smaller companies for Yahoo–such as Citizen Sports and Associated Content–that’s been frustrating to Siegel, said sources.
Sources also noted that Siegel has also been commuting to Yahoo’s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ from New York, where his family lives–also a factor in his decision to leave.
He apparently told his Yahoo bosses he was leaving just last week and the company has no replacement as yet.
Yahoo declined to comment about Siegel’s status.

Part1. How to watch YouTube video on PSP directly with wifi internet?
As PSP's web browser only support the older version of flash while YouTube uses flash 9, if you want to watch YouTube on PSP directly with the wifi, you must upgrade to the newest firmware f and install a flash player on your PSP. A Japanese developer NekoMiMi has achieved that with PSPTube. Here are the steps:
Download the PSPTube from here http://www.PSP-hacks.com/file/1225 and open the zip file. Now before putting it in your PSP open the PSPTube.cfg file and press ctrl + F, and type in "DEV" press until you find Dev id="".
Ok now go to http://www.youtube.com/dev create an account and insert the account in between the arentheses.
Extract the PSPTube from the 200over folder and put it in GAME352 folder (Set the Kernel to the 352) Now open it in the PSP and choose an internet connection with the Circle button, it may say no videos, press circle and you'll be able to search.
Here is the control info:
X: Cancel; O: Accept; L/R: Last/Next Page; Start: Pause;
Select: Change aspect ratio (Original Size, Full screen)
Part2. How to rip DVD and convert video to PSP
PSP can play only MP4 video, DVD movie is MPEG-2 video and has CSS protected, so you have to rip the DVD movie to MP4, and then transfer it to PSP, If you stick with freeware, you can use DVD Shrink to rip the DVD to computer, and then use PSP Video 9 to convert the ripped file to MP4 video. As for me, I’d prefer using Aiseesoft PSP Movie Creator, it can rip protected DVD movie and convert video to MP4 video, more over, you can also trim or crop the DVD movie to enjoy the video on PSP with full screen, that’s really cool. What you have to do just put your DVDs on your DVD drive, and then click start button to begin the conversion. If you want to learn more about it, you can refer to its official site:

YouTube is a place everybody knows for free videos, I often download free videos from it, but the downloaded YouTube video is flv format, so a flv converter is necessary, you can go to this website: http://vixy.net/ .It's a free online FLV converter. Then go to YouTube and find a video that you loved. Copy the URL that in the Red box. Like this format:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdUUx5FdySs
Then Paste your video URL to the input box (figure above), choose the right format you want. If you want to edit the video, AVI is a good choice. And MP4 is fit for iPod, PSP and other MP4 players, click “start” to start the conversion. When the conversion finished, you will get the download link of the output video. Click the download link to download the video and save it in your computer, then copy the MP4 video to the “Video” folder in the PSP memory stick.
Part4. How to transfer video to PSP
You can download this free PSP video manager, it’s totally free, it can help you transfer MP4 video to PSP directly; fully support all firmware versions of PSP. Here is the download link
http://www.youtubetoipod.biz/software/psp-video-manager.html
what you have to do just add your MP4 video files to the software, connect your PSP to computer via the USB model, and then click Move, done.
Part5. How to downgrade PSP
All downgrades have a chance of bricking PSP, so if you want to, you must aware that there is always some level of risk.
Part6. How to download free limewire music and video to PSP
If you like to download free music and video to PSP, limewire is surely your right hand; you can download limewire software free from its official site: http://www.limeware.com, install and run it, then type key words to search the music and video you’re interested in, and then download it.
